eBike Policy
In our ongoing effort to ensure the safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of our parks for all users, the Board has recently adopted a new ordinance regulating the use of electric bicycles (eBikes) and other micromobility devices on all District property.
This policy was created in response to the growing use of eBikes and similar devices and aims to balance modern mobility with public safety.
What is allowed?
The following devices are allowed on Park District property but their use is limited to designated area and must follow any specific guidelines:
Class 1 eBikes (pedal-assist, <750W, max 20mph): allowed only on designated trails & paths. The device must have functional pedals and the rider must be over the age of 16.
Bicycles (non-electric): allowed on bike paths and paved trails. The rider must obey all posted signs and rules.
ADA Mobility Devices: allowed in all areas as needed per ADA.
What is NOT allowed?
The following devices are NOT allowed on Park District property.
Class 2 or 3 eBikes (throttle-assist, faster speeds)
Electric Scooters (as defined by IL law)
Gas-powered bikes or scooters
ATVs, Go-Karts, Mopeds, Segways, and Golf Carts
ADA Accessibility
This policy fully accommodates the use of Other Power-Driven Mobility Devices (OPDMDs) for individuals with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
